Universal Sink Wrap

Why Do I Need This?

Both federal and state building codes mandate a percentage of the total number of covered multi-family residential apartments to be fully accessible for persons with mobility impairments. Institutional buildings, university housing, and other private, state and federally owned buildings may have mandated accessibility code compliant public restrooms and other “common use” areas. Both federal
(ADA , 4.24.6 Exposed Pipes and Surfaces . Hot water and drain pipes exposed under sinks shall be insulated or otherwise configured so as to protect against contact. There shall be no sharp or abrasive surfaces under sinks. ) and state building codes mandate burn and rough surface protection devices for sinks in these covered buildings. This includes hot and cold water supply lines under sinks, waste pipes and garbage disposals under sinks, and protection for the bottom of the sink if in the knee space. These same federal and state accessibility codes require clear knee spaces under sinks for wheelchair users. Generally, the sink base cabinet doors and cabinet fronts are removed to allow better access for someone in a wheelchair. This creates multiple hazards for a wheelchair user, including scalding from boiling water poured into the sink after cooking, and from knee and leg abrasions from the rough, factory-applied coating under the sink for noise reduction.

What Exactly Is The Universal Sink Wrap?

The Universal Sink Wrap is an easy-to-install heat and skin protection blanket that attaches to the underside of a kitchen sink. This insulated sheet protects the knees and legs of a wheelchair user whose legs are positioned under the sink during use. The ¼” thick flexible elastomeric thermal insulation sheet comes in a 18” x 24” size. It is black in color and has a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) applied to the entire back. The PSA speeds up installation time and reduces the amount of solvent based contact adhesives. The sink wrap is tear resistant. It is CFC-free. The closed-cell structure and unique formulation retards the flow of moisture vapor. It acts as an ideal insulator.

How do I install the Universal Sink Wrap?

It's best to make a pattern with the sink wrap before installing the sink. If the sink is already installed, a little patience is needed for that perfect fit. It is important to remember that the sink wrap needs to be installed towards the front of the cabinet, not behind. The rear of the sink will not be exposed to a wheelchair user. Once a fitted pattern is made, use it to cut sheets of sink wrap for all remaining sinks to be protected. The first sink I protected with sink wrap took me twenty minutes. I used the first sheet as a pattern for the remaining twenty two sinks. With a pattern, I installed the remaining sink wraps within five minutes each.

The rear of the sheet has a film over the PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive). Once the sink wrap is cut to fit the sink bottom, remove the film backing a little at a time. I removed all the film at once during my first installation. I ruined the sheet. That stuff really sticks!

Press the sink wrap with the PSA exposed to the bottom of the sink. Measure the corners for a good fit. The PSA backing will hold the sink wrap in place white you are measuring.

With scissors, clip the corners around the sink so they fit close together without stretching the sink wrap. Once you have a good fit around both corners, remove the whole sheet to make a pattern out of. Afterwards, install the sink wrap, fastening the wrap to the sink front first. Then apply the sides. Be sure to remove the film over the PSA as you go. If you get too far ahead of yourself, the sink wrap will stick to itself. Press the wrap firmly over the entire covered area. You are now ready to tackle the remaining sinks!

How much is The Universal Sink Wrap?

The cost is $38.43 per sheet. One 24"x 18'will cover a two-compartment sink. The minimum order is 6 sheet.

6 sheets @ $38.43 = $230.58 + $14.27 ( S&H) = Total cost of $244.85

12 sheets @ $35.67 = $428.04 + $28.49 ( S&H) = Total cost of $456.53

24 sheets @ $30.00 = $720.00 + $43.50 ( S&H) = Total cost of $763.50
